Curse of the Sea Rats for PS5 is a hand-drawn Metroidvania action-platformer where four prisoners aboard a British empire prison ship—Scottish sailor Douglas, American sharpshooter Buffalo, Japanese assassin Akane, and Nigerian warrior Bussa—are transformed into rats by the notorious pirate witch Flora Burn after she breaks her son out of captivity. The ship's captain offers the prisoners their freedom if they can capture Flora Burn and rescue the Admiral's son, sending them on an epic quest across the mysterious Irish coast in 1777 where they must battle diabolic creatures, fight brutal bosses, and ultimately break the curse to regain their human forms. The game features four playable characters each with unique weapons and special abilities—players can switch between them at designated save points in single-player or team up with up to four players in local co-op multiplayer—exploring a vast non-linear map with hundreds of interconnected rooms, discovering secret areas and multiple endings, solving environmental puzzles, and upgrading abilities throughout the 12+ hour main quest.
